Henry must have been thinking the same thing. ‘I suspect we know too much,’ he said.

‘Enough to merit this sort of treatment? But what do we know?’

‘That the man we’re staying with may not be the lord of the manor, and rightful owner of the donkey sanctuary. That might be enough to spook the donkey folk.’

‘I’m not sure those ladies would take kindly to being referred to as “donkey folk”, Henry, but I get the gist of what you’re saying.’

Henry got to his feet with a groan.

‘Are you hurt?’

‘No, no, I’m all right really. Apart from my nose, just a little winded.’

‘The only bruises I got were when we were being hauled up the stairs, and whoever was carrying me apologised for each one. I suspect we were treated rather gently, given the circumstances, although these stockings will never be the same again – and before you say anything, yes. I shall be putting them on expenses!’

‘And rightfully so,’ said Henry, with a raised eyebrow. ‘Your silks, however…’

‘They are in one piece and have helped immeasurably with the entire experience, thank you for asking. Silk keeps you warm and it is important to be comfortable if one is to work at one’s best. Worth every penny.’ I took a bite of a rock cake. ‘Shame I’m not wearing my cloche with the hat pins, though.’

‘Why?’

‘It’s just… a warmer hat,’ I said nonsensically, hoping that Henry wouldn’t ask any more questions. Berets aren’t useful for opening doors, and there was no need for him to know what I was and wasn’t capable of, although I would have had that door open in a jiffy if I had had my tools.
